Intiman Theatre presents

THE EVENTS By David Greig
Directed by Paul Budraitis

July 18-August 10, 2019 at Erickson Theatre, 1524 Harvard Avenue, Seattle

Run time: 100 minutes with no intermission

In the wake of a mass shooting, lone survivor Claire yearns to find the compassion, understanding, and peace she needs to overcome her trauma—but thoughts and visions of the shooter haunt her every step. A timely exploration of violence, obsession, and our desire to fathom the unfathomable, The Events excavates the humanity found even in circumstances of extraordinary evil, examining the actors on both sides of an unimaginable tragedy.

Every night includes a unique community choir. Choir directors include Deeji Killian (Northwest Firelight Chorale), Janet Stecher (Seattle Labor Chorus) and Jennifer Rodgers (Everett Chorale), and have been nothing but supportive and open with their networks and time. This has been a wonderful community-engaged experience. Their members are super excited to perform with INTIMAN and this wonderful cast and crew. Being that the members never receive a script, they learn about the play while the performance is happening. That was the playwright’s intentions-to have the choir be an extension of the audience. The idea is to have the audience watch the play and also watch the choir watch the play.

Excerpt from the play

Claire
Something I haven’t told anyone. Mainly because I haven’t been able to put it into words. Or at least, I can put it into words but the words I would have to put it into are words that people might think sound weird, or mad.

The Boy
If I’m going to make a mark on the world I have to do it now.
The only means I have are art or violence.
And I was never any good at drawing.

Best Theatre No.1 “It was a piece which chewed furiously at both itself and some weighty questions: what do we mean by community? Who is invited in, who excluded? How do you respond if your life is blown apart by violence? ” – Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

Walk up tickets are available for every show.

There will be conversations following every performance facilitated with our Community Liason team to have a moment with the audience after the show and address issues discussed in the play.

David Greig he/him (Playwright) has been described in the Daily Telegraph as ‘one of the most interesting and adventurous British dramatists of his generation’. He is also one of Britain’s most prolific modern playwrights. But Greig’s work is as notable for its variety as its volume. His plays include adaptations and translations (Albert Camus’ Caligula, 2003; Euripedes’ The Bacchae, 2007; and Strindberg’s The Creditors, 2008), children’s plays (e.g. the award-winning Gobbo, 2006; and Herges Adventures of Tintin, 2005) and historical plays (e.g. Dunsinane, set in 11th-century Scotland). Noted for averaging almost five new plays per year, his output includes avant-garde, experimental pieces (see his work with ‘Suspect Culture’ below) as well as more frivolous, light-hearted productions that draw upon elements of the musical tradition (e.g. Midsummer: A Play with Songs, a romantic comedy set in Edinburgh, and co-produced with Gordon McIntyre (lyricist of Edinburgh indie band, Ballboy).

Best Theatre No.1 “It was a piece which chewed furiously at both itself and some weighty questions: what do we mean by community? Who is invited in, who excluded? How do you respond if your life is blown apart by violence? ” – Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

New York Times Critics Pick: “An agitated anguish beats against the walls of ritual in “The Events,” a solemn, searching and ultimately very moving play about a faith-shattering act of violence. This gutsy work by the Scottish dramatist David Greig, which opened on Thursday night at New York Theater Workshop, sets the restless pain of a mass-shooting survivor against the stolid, consoling presence of a community choir. ” – Ben Brantley, The New York Times
