A PENNY DREADFUL
Directed by Jasmine Joshua
Erickson Theatre - 1524 Harvard Ave Seattle, WA 98122
You’re invited to join Intiman Theatre for a reimagined revival of a classic production from the company’s 49-year history: THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP, A PENNY DREADFUL by Charles Ludlam, directed by Jasmine Joshua. This will be the first Intiman production since the onset of the COVID pandemic, and the first in the company’s new home at Seattle Central College. Prepare to laugh ’till it hurts as Helen Roundhill and Jesse Calixto bring a cast of eight characters to life in this riotous camp comedy.
"Wickedly funny!"
-New York Times
"High camp humor and biting satire that is filled with many belly-laughs."
-Chicago Critic
"The goal is to crack you up. Mission accomplished."
-NY Daily News
"A camp celebration of several genres, as well as a tribute to all things scary."
-Splash Magazine (LA)
THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP centers on an English estate haunted by the former mistress who has recently passed (or has she?). There are mummies, werewolves, mistaken identities, and a ton of madcap blunders. Two performers, dozens of wigs, and 35 costume quick-changes bring an eclectic cast of characters to life in this camp comedy classic from Charles Ludlam (1943-1987), creator of New York’s Ridiculous Theatrical Company.
THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP premiered in October 1984 at the Sheridan Square Playhouse in New York City where it played for two years, and it remains Ludlam’s most popular play. This will be the second time Intiman audiences will enjoy the show, after it was last seen in 2005. It is a performer’s tour-de-force with countless wigs and costume quick-changes, praised both for its entertainment value and relevance. It premiered during the height of the AIDS pandemic, and uses gothic themes and supernatural characters to juxtapose real-life tragedy with theatrical artifice.
Intiman Theatre guarantees your ticket purchase. We are implementing rigorous COVID-19 safety and testing protocols for our cast and crew, and in the event of a cancellation, we will reach out to offer you an exchange or refund (your choice!). We also gratefully accept tax-deductible donations of any unused tickets.

Charles Ludlam (1943 – 1987), was an American playwright, director, and actor. He was born in Long Island, and grew to love theatre when he saw a Punch and Judy show at a local fair.
After studying drama at Hofstra University, Ludlam moved into Greenwich Village, where he would spend the rest of his life, and became part of the new gay theater and film scene that was flourishing in the mid-1960s. He founded his own theatre company, the Ridiculous Theatre Company in 1967. Like his idol, Molière, Ludlam was the producer, director, playwright, and diva of his company from its inception in 1967 until his death. He wrote at least one play a year. The company moved from venue to venue in its early years, usually playing late-night shows, until it found a permanent home in a former nightclub at One Sheridan Square in 1967.
Ludlams’s plays were built from trash culture, particularly B movies (such as Conquest of the Universe [1967]) and high art (such as his version of Wagner’s ring cycle, Der Ring Gott Farblonjet [1977]). It is difficult to separate the most successful works from Ludlam’s famous performances in them: his adaptation of Camille (1973); and the “Victorian penny dreadful,” The Mystery of Irma Vep (1984), in which he and Everett Quinton played seven male and female roles. Irma Vep has become a repertory staple in theaters across America.
