SEATTLE, WA (April 28, 2022) —  Intiman Theatre’s board of directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Wesley Frugé as the new Managing Director for the company. Wesley has been with Intiman for three years, and will lead the organization alongside Artistic Director, Jennifer Zeyl, and Board Chair, L.B. Morse.

Wesley started at Intiman in spring of 2019 working as a consultant to develop the FREE FOR EVERYONE access program, and was hired full-time in August of that year as Development & Communications Director – a role he has served in since. As DevComm Director, he executed multiple fundraising initiatives and events that exceeded their goal and has raised over $2M for the company. He developed and led the community-engaged strategic planning process in 2020, created over ten virtual events for the theatre, and refined Intiman’s online presence and messaging. He has worked in professional theatre for more than 20 years and has served as an arts administrator for the last decade. He was the Founder and Artistic Director of Forward Flux Productions which produced new work from women and BIPOC artists in Seattle for five years. In addition, he is active in the LGBTQ+ community, where he co-founded and is the Executive Director of BeautyBoiz, creating live events and media by and for the Queer community.

L.B. Morse says: “The Intiman board of trustees is thrilled to welcome Wesley to the role of Managing Director where he will be responsible for executing the strategic plan he was so intimately involved in creating. His deep love for the organization and his years of service as our Development & Communications Director make him a phenomenal fit for his new position, and we are very excited to collaborate with him as Intiman continues to grow.”

“I am so excited to fully partner with Wesley in leading Intiman,” says Jennifer Zeyl. “We have partnered through so much change and growth for the company in the past three years. Guided by Wesley’s ‘yes, and’ collaborative attitude and strategic mind, Initman will continue to play our strongest hand well into our next evolution.”

Intiman has resumed full production and opens their newest comedy, TWO MILE HOLLOW, tonight at Broadway Performance Hall, playing through May 14th. The company is now offering streaming options for their productions for those who continue to be impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and will stream TWO MILE HOLLOW on demand May 9-15th. Transition at Intiman

Amy Zimerman. Photo by Joe Moore.

Intiman is embarking on an exciting transition: Managing Director Amy Zimerman recently accepted a new position and has departed the organization. We are so grateful for Amy’s leadership over the past year as we transitioned to our new home in Capitol Hill, changed our fiscal calendar, received two stellar financial audits, and re-hired our entire production department of 20+ Union professionals.

Intiman is an incredibly unique organization in the nonprofit arts landscape, both for its nimbleness, and for its focus on production and arts education while centering social justice. This transition gives the board and staff the opportunity to collaboratively envision the best leadership structure for the future. While doing so, we are upholding our vision statement:

Intiman Theatre seeks to inspire national activism from the intersection of our Seattle communities. We are fearless in our examination of traditional theatre operations and arts education models; and we dare to imagine and enact revolutionary new practices, leading to a more equitable world.

As our plans become clear, we will be sure to update you. In the meantime, we are covering Amy’s responsibilities through a combination of staff, board, and consultants – there will be no lapse of financial oversight at Intiman Theatre.

Resuming production would be no small task under ordinary circumstances, and yet these are extraordinary times, made even more so by a change of location and facilities. We are proud of what this team has accomplished, and will soon celebrate the culmination of this work when we open THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP in our new home.

However, you have supported Intiman over the years – by attending a show, making a donation, or participating in one of our education programs – you have been essential in defining this new chapter of the theatre; we would not be here without you. Thank you.

Intiman Theatre and BECU Announce "Angels in Seattle" Award Recipients

Intiman Theatre and BECU have partnered to create the “Angels in Seattle: Arts Advocate Awards” which will be distributed on the first day of HOMECOMING Performing Arts Festival. Five artists whose steadfast work during the pandemic kept our communities thriving will each receive a $1,000 check sponsored by BECU. One recipient each was selected by Intiman Theatre, LANGSTON, Red Eagle Soaring, BeautyBoiz, and Velocity Dance Center. The focus of the awards is to honor the unsung heroes of the industry: arts administrators, arts educators, and artists working behind the scenes.

The arts community is always stepping in to lend a hand during a crisis, and these five recipients were beacons of hope and resilience for all of Seattle during the COVID-19 pandemic: Alyza DelPan-Monley (selected by Velocity for their work making the dance community more equitable, innovative, and accessible); Ana María Campoy (selected by Intiman for founding WashMasks Mutual Aid, providing PPE and support for migrant and seasonal farm workers); Jess Chrivoli (selected by Red Eagle Soaring for their volunteer work at the Seattle Indigenous Youth Art & Performance Summer Workshop); Michael B. Maine (selected by LANGSTON for his work uplifting underrepresented voices and equipping local artists with a focus on Black and QTPOC artists); and Sefina Vailoa Aulei (selected by BeautyBoiz for her work mentoring queer people with priority to young trans women of color in the House and Ballroom community).

“BECU drives our purpose to improve the financial well-being of our members and their communities from the credit union philosophy of People Helping People,” shares Stephen Black, Vice President Brand Strategy at BECU. “To recognize the contributions of these Angels in Seattle is a natural extension of that commitment.”

The recipients will be honored at an outdoor award ceremony held on Saturday, September 18th at 6:00pm. A Festival Pass or Single Day ticket for HOMECOMING is required to attend the ceremony. Tickets range from $5-$105. A limited number of FREE FOR EVERYONE tickets will be available at the box office on the day of the festival.

He’s the last person to highlight the many good works he does, so we’d like to show him some love.

Sefina Vailoa Aulei is the Founding Mother of The Illustrious House of Essence.
I am 27 years old and I work for an amazing grass roots nonprofit organization, UTOPIA Washington as the Program Coordinator for SWEI – Sex Worker Empowerment Initiative. As someone who holds indigenous identity as a Polynesian transwoman, a lot of love and culture is embedded into my culture, and I carry that into all relationships with other QTBIPOC brothers, sisters, and siblings. This natural instinct to nurture and support has especially helped shape and guide other girls and women like me and I’m very proud and grateful for it. And I’m thankful for the House & Ballroom culture that has molded me throughout my upbringing in the Foster Care system. It has taught me about chosen family and providing space for my Fellow Trans Women of Color. This award does not only acknowledge me, but my chosen family and home, The Illustrious House of Essence. Thank you. utopiawa.org

Note from BeautyBoiz:
Vai works tirelessly to support the LGBTQIA+ community by being a mentor to young queer people with priority to young trans women of color all over seattle. Vai opens her heart and her home to our most vulnerable community members and shows up constantly providing guidance and resources to people who need it. We want to say THANK YOU to Mother Essence for everything she does for BeautyBoiz and for the community at large.
