Union strong

Intiman Theatre stands in solidarity with SAG-AFTRA and WGA as they strike in pursuit of a fair contract. We are proud to remain a full union theatre.

Intiman works with all of the theatrical unions including IATSE and AEA and will continue to provide union jobs to Seattle artists. Every Member, donor, sponsor, and ticket buyer at Intiman is helping to make Seattle union strong!

First Class of AA Degree Graduates

Intiman Theatre joins with Seattle Central College (SCC) in celebrating the first class of graduates with an AA Degree emphasis in Technical Theatre for Social Justice! Four students have completed the two year course of study: Bill Fischer, Egel Legecy (pictured above), Garrett M. Megathlin, and Ali Rahmn. Intiman is the professional theatre-in-residence at SCC, and launched this degree with the college in the fall of 2021.

This first cohort came from local high schools including Franklin, Garfield, and Roosevelt, and some are planning to immediately enter the workforce while others are planning to continue their studies including at the University of Washington. Two of these students were already hired professionally by Intiman as Head Electricians during the spring 2023 production of The Niceties, earning a union wage.

The first year curriculum provides a comprehensive overview of the technical skills needed to work behind the scenes. During their second year, students receive hands-on learning opportunities working alongside world-class professionals during internships with Intiman Theatre. Each internship is uniquely created for the individual student, allowing them to focus on the aspect of technical theatre that most interests them while ensuring they have a well rounded sense of all areas. The first cohort focused on lighting, electrics, set construction, and Egel Legecy wants to use their knowledge to become an Artistic Director one day.

“(During the AA Degree program) I was able to gain deeper knowledge of how the various elements of design come together and how different departments all work together to support the story of a play,” said graduate Ali Rahmn (pictured). “I now know how to program a light board and how to work as a lighting technician alongside stagehands in other departments.”

Interim President at Seattle Central College Dr. Bradley Lane said, “We’re thrilled to celebrate these first graduates from the Technical Theatre for Social Justice program at Seattle Central, and we are excited to see them already entering the workforce as well-trained, union-represented employees in Seattle’s vibrant arts and theater industry. We expect that this program and our unique partnership with Intiman Theatre will only grow stronger as we keep welcoming future—and larger—classes in the years to come!”

Applications are currently being accepted for the third cohort which will begin class this fall, while the second cohort enter their final year and begin their internships. The second cohort is double the size of the first, and there is room for up to 25 students in the third class. Potential students can learn more about the AA Degree or apply today by clicking the links below.

Special thanks to Foundry10 for their pioneering support of the AA Degree.

Graduate Ali Rahmn talks about her experience in the AA Degree program with Intiman Theatre at Seattle Central College.

Directed by Dani Davis
November 1-4, 2023
Erickson Theatre (1524 Harvard Ave. Seattle WA 98122)

A comedy and music extravaganza about the problem men have with lying and where that’s gotten the rest of us, particularly women. And Jews. Starring writer and performer Cynthia Kaplan, Cindy of Arc speaks truth to politics, religion, Nazis, dogs, and the guys who wrote Delta Dawn, all in a blisteringly hilarious 70 minutes. Select performances will benefit local women’s and reproductive rights organizations.

“We are insanely excited to bring our subversive rock n’ roll comedy to Intiman Theatre. Our missions align as though we wrote them together: we both believe theater should excite and incite. It should inspire laughter and hopefully some singing along, but it should also move us to see the world we live in with clear eyes, sparking dialogue and even change.” -Cynthia Kaplan

“I am thrilled to be working with Intiman again, and on such a beautifully community-focused project like Black Nativity. While we don’t plan to reproduce the scale of Intiman’s past productions, we do commit to representing the spirit of community and hope that Langston Hughes’ play intends. We want to start a new Seattle holiday tradition and are so excited for folks to join us in this new beginning.” -Valerie Curtis-Newton

The Lower Depths

Directed by Gavin Reub
February 6-24, 2024

As timely now as it was when it first debuted at the Moscow Art Theatre in 1902, Maxim Gorky’s masterpiece is brought to life in a new adaptation created by The Seagull Project over an 18-month process. Neglected, seeking refuge and hope, fourteen lost souls battle for love and humanity while pushing at the limits of the human spirit and a society at the breaking point.

“The Seagull Project was founded on the belief that it takes time to create art with integrity, vision, and dedication to craft. Intiman has a long history of supporting work in that same vein, and it is truly an honor to create this production alongside them.” -Gavin Reub

The Lion Tells His Tale
By Vida Oliphant Sneed

Featuring Delbert Richardson’s American History Traveling Museum: The “Unspoken” Truths
May 1-5, 2024
Broadway Performance Hall (1625 Broadway, Seattle WA 98122)

Delbert Richardson’s national award-winning museum comes to life on stage for a brand new theatrical experience. Audiences will be transported on a journey of awakening as the brilliance, resistance, and resilience of Black people from Africa to the Americas is brought to life. Music, dance, and spoken word carry our hero through time as we all gather to engage and learn. “Until the lion tells his tale, the hunt will always glorify the hunter.” – African proverb

“Bringing my life’s work to the Intiman is surreal. Who has a play written about them and their life’s work? It’s time for this hunter to tell HIS tale!” -Delbert Richardson

Our Presenting Partners

The Williams Project

The Williams Project is a national professional theatre ensemble, building ambitiously re-imagined productions of American plays. The company’s mission is to make theatrical excellence accessible to diverse and engaged audiences, while paying artists a living wage.

We create theatre that is:

  • Entertaining enough to make everyone feel welcome and part of a community;
  • Ambitious enough to risk humiliating failure;
  • Powerful enough to move people to love each other more, even in the face of the temporary nature of theatre and life.

We make theatre in a manner consistent with our belief that professional artists are vital to our culture and deserve to be compensated in a way that recognizes their value. Great theatre artists are working class heroes, who sacrifice greatly to make meaningful work. We strive to pay artists living wages in order to support that work.

The Hansberry Project

The Hansberry Project is a professional black theatre company dedicated to the artistic exploration of African American life, history and culture. From initial sketches to fully-realized productions, the Hansberry Project promotes and supports black theatre artists of diverse interests and disciplines, speaking on a range of themes and working in a variety of styles.

Founded in 2004 and officially launched in 2006, The Hansberry Project was created as an African American theatre lab, led by African American artists and designed to provide the community with consistent access to the African American artistic voice.

The Hansberry Project is rooted in the convictions that black artists should be at the center of the artistic process, that the community deserves excellence in its art, and that theatre’s fundamental function is to put people in relationship to one another. Our goal is to create a space where the entire community can be enriched by the voices of professional black artists, reflecting autonomous concerns, investigations, dreams, and artistic expression.

Known for her pervasive style, a soul-grunge front woman turned piano songstress, Shaina Shepherd’s notable vocal stylings have brought her into various creative spaces — from musical studio collaborations beyond genre, to moving performances across the country, to building community in music and commerce one step at a time. Inspired by the parallels between gospel and garbage metal, Shepherd’s music was lovingly branded “Tina Simone”: combining rock opera theatrics with stony piano laden story telling. Creating in the city where both Pearl Jam and Quincy Jones cut their teeth, Shaina heart songs are steeped in American folk and redefine the Outlaw genre with an infusion of Tina Turner, Dinah Washington and Nina Simone. Shaina’s currently on the road and preparing to record her first body of work. When Shaina isn’t in the studio, she is a community organizer, music educator and event producer in Seattle, WA. Shaina is also a national trustee for the PNW chapter of the Recording Academy (Grammys), a member of multiple boards in the Seattle area and a local advocate for music and the arts on the West Coast.
