July 10 – August 2
12th Ave Arts Mainstage

by Tennessee Williams
Directed by Ryan Purcell

This gloriously irreverent, pop-infused re-staging of Williams’ classic tale features Intiman’s first Company-in-Residence The Williams Project, a newly established theatre troupe led by Seattle native Ryan Purcell.

A Franklin High School graduate, Purcell’s first experience watching professional theatre was Intiman’s 1998 production of Williams’ The Glass Menagerie. Purcell returned to Intiman in 2012 as Associate Director for Miracle!, and directed a workshop presentation of Orpheus Descending during the 2014 festival.

As Intiman’s first Company-in-Residence, The Williams Project will receive mentoring in all aspects of nonprofit arts management, and support in establishing a local audience base.

“Providing a home for artists who seek to produce socially relevant theatrical work, and who want to celebrate diversity in casting on stage, is a priority for Intiman,” said Producing Artistic Director Andrew Russell. “I am thrilled to introduce Ryan Purcell and this incredible group of actors to our festival company, audience, and community.”

The Orpheus Descending cast includes Grant Chapman, Becky Gibel, Elise LeBreton, Kemiyondo Coutinho, Richard Prioleau, Max Rosenak, and Charlie Thurston.

The Cornish Playhouse at Seattle Center

by Lillian Hellman
Directed by Sheila Daniels

Presented in repertory with John Baxter, Lillian Hellman’s classic American play is a traditional witch-hunt tale about the disastrous consequences wrought upon two schoolteachers by one vengeful pupil’s whisper.

Banned in London and several cities across America when the play made its 1934 Broadway debut, The Children’s Hour preceded Arthur Miller’s iconic witch-hunt tale The Crucible by nearly 20 years, and cemented Hellman’s position as one of America’s leading female playwrights.

The Children’s Hour stars Hannah Mootz (Tail of Wasps, New Century Theatre Company; Bo-Nita, Seattle Repertory Theatre) as Martha Dobie; Lanise Shelley (As You Like It, American Repertory Theater; Cry, the Beloved County, Book-it Repertory Theatre) as Karen Wright; and Suzanne Bouchard (Dear Elizabeth, Seattle Repertory Theatre; Julius Caesar, Seattle Shakespeare Company) as Amelia Tilford.

Sheila Daniels returns to Intiman for her second festival season (Lysistrata) to direct The Children’s Hour. As Associate Director for Intiman from 2007-2009, Daniels directed A Streetcar Named DesireCrime and Punishment, and Abe Lincoln in Illinois. She has directed work on nearly every Seattle mainstage, including ACT, Seattle Repertory Theatre, and Seattle Children’s Theatre.

The Children’s Hour cast also features Michael Place, Julia Prud’homme, and Betsy Schwartz. Additional cast members are Maya Burton, Meghan Dolbey, Meme Garcia, Rebecca Love, Jasmine Sim, Mia Tesfe, and Te Yellend.

The 2015 festival company also includes 28 actors, directors, and writers who will participate in this year’s Emerging Artist Program (IEAP), Intiman’s annual training initiative for aspiring theatre professionals.

This diverse cadre of emerging theatre talent – ranging in experience from raw talent to Equity candidates, with a primary focus on underrepresented populations – includes local and international artists from Seattle Central College to New York University and beyond.

Over eight weeks, the Emerging Artists will receive detailed insight into the professional theatre industry, gain measurable skills in their selected area of concentration, and complete the program with increased connectedness to Intiman and the greater Seattle theatre community.

The IEAP will culminate in a showcase featuring short plays inspired by the festival theme. The Emerging Artist Showcase is free and open to the public.
